The Sawara Grand Festival, the summer festival and the autumn festival (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage / Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property) is called one of the three major Kanto float festivals and has a tradition of about 300 years.
While echoing the sound of the three major Japanese music "Sawara Hayashi" throughout the city, you can enjoy the atmosphere of Koedo (the national preservation area of traditional buildings) while glancing at the eaves of the houses.
It is reminiscent of the scene of the Edo Period.
The boasted floats are decorated with heavy sculptures of Kanto carvings, and the upper part has a 4m-high adult shape created by a master doll maker from the Edo and Meiji periods.
It is a full impact.
In July, the Yasaka Shrine Gion Festival, there are 10 vehicles across the east side (Honjuku area) across the Onogawa River.
In October, the Suwa Shrine autumn festival, there were 14 vehicles on the western side of the Onogawa (Shinjuku area).
At the Suigo Sawara floats, two floats for the summer festival and one for the autumn festival are displayed alternately.
(Highlight)
The biggest highlight is the special twisting that creates a showground by competing for a technique called “turning”!
In "Turning," the giant float, which weighs 4 tons and is 7m high, is given a unique twisting method called "No-no-ji drawing ", "Soroban drawing ", and "Small-size drawing"and gather attention.
It is also recommended to see different floats during the day and at night.
In addition, stalls are also recommended at the Sawara festival's summer festival!
The stalls of the Sawara festival have stalls on the grounds of Yasaka Shrine and on surrounding roads.there are more than 100 stalls!
Not only classic food stalls such as shaved ice and takoyaki, but also local food stalls that can only be tasted in this area will be opened. Sawara's specialty, "Imo Yokan" and "Sparrow Yaki" are recommended!
